Don Phelps

Don Phelps displays the quiet confidence of a seasoned professional.His "seasoning" includes 25 solid years of experience beginning in radio and television, leading to his current position, co-anchor of Channel 31's 6pm News. As his career was evolving, Don held various positions in radio such as disc jockey, news reporter, and play-by-play announcer for Auburn University Baseball. In television he gained experience as a sportscaster, booth announcer, host of a daily children's program, assignment editor, investigative reporter, and news anchor.

Don's atypical background may have contributed to his early entry into the broadcasting field. As the son of a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force, Don's growing-up years were spent in several geographical locations. He was born in Columbia, South Carolina, but moved with his family to Los Angeles and later to Europe.

Don joined WAAY-TV in 1985 as the 6pm and 10pm news anchor. During his time at Channel 31 his assignments have carried him to Canada, the former Soviet Union, and to Florida to cover the "Discovery" launch following the Challenger disaster. Don won an Associated Press award for his anchoring of the return to flight launch. Don has also won awards for several other stories including "Best Investigative Reporting" and most recently was named "Best Anchor" by the Alabama Associated Press.

Don has been married for 18 years to his wife Lydia. They have 3 children: Sara, Daniel, and Rebekah.
