Gary Dobbs is
WAAY-TV's midday and 5pm weather forecaster. Gary joined Channel 31 as
Director of Weather Services on May 4, 1984, and has been forecasting
weather in the valley ever since. Some of the most important severe
weather events Gary covered include the ice storm of 1985 and the deadly
tornadoes of 1989. He's also covered numerous hurricanes in the Gulf and
Atlantic and sent back reports of tracking interest and damage assessment.
Even with all his experience, Gary regularly attends several severe
weather seminars in University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa with a
Bachelor's degree in Broadcast and Film Communication. Gary also attended
Penn State University studying Atmospheric Sciences. Positions held before
his stint at WAAY-TV include WCFT-TV (Sports Director and
Chief Meteorologist); WTBC Radio, Tuscaloosa (Assistant News Director);
WHBB Radio, Selma (News Director); WFEB Radio, Sylacauga (General
Manager); and WDNG Radio, Anniston (Sales Executive).
Born in Childersburg, Alabama, Gary is married to the former Belinda King of Decatur, Alabama, who teaches in the Madison County Schools.He has one Daughter, Shannon, and two sons: Gary Jr., and Brandon Walker.
